5-Speed to 6- or 7-Speed You will generally need to add a few spacer washers to the right side of the axle, building it up far enought that the cone locknut can reach the frame dropout through the wider freewheel body. You will need to re-center the axle but probably won’t need to replace it with a longer one.
Can you replace a 5 speed freewheel with a 6 speed?
According to Sheldon Brown the sprocket thickness and spacing are the same for 5 and 6 speed freewheels, so the 6 speed is wider overall. So you’d be OK as far as the shifter / cable pull, but it may not fit with your axle / dropout spacing. The smallest sprocket could be hitting the dropout / chainstay.
Should I upgrade my bike cassette?
The main reason for making cassettes is to add more control to the pedaling intensity, which makes the bike go faster on downhills and rideable on steep climbs. Changing the cassette on this case is considered as a necessary upgrade.
Will a 11 speed cassette fit on a 7 speed hub?
A 7-speed cassette can be installed on an 11-speed hub. 11-speed hubs have a wider freehub body than the one found on 7-speed hubs. If the 11-speed hub is designed for MTBs, the spacer has to be between 2.15mm to 3.45mm depending on the cassette’s width.
Can I put a 6 speed cassette on a 7 speed hub?
6 and 7 speed have different spacing, 8 is slightly different to 7 as well. If the bike is from post 1989 or so it will have a block not a cassette, and a cassette won’t go on the hub. If it’s a 6 speed cassette it may have a threaded top cog meaning a modern 7 speed cassette won’t fit either.
Can I put a different cassette on my bike?
In some cases, it is possible to run a cassette from a different brand than the rest of your drivetrain. SRAM and Shimano cassettes, on either road or mountain bike, are interchangeable with each other as the spacing is the same between the sprockets.
Can I put a 8 speed cassette on a 7 speed hub?
It should work. Spacing on Shimano is 5mm for 7 sp and 4.8mm on 8 sp. You’ll wind up with a phantom gear but everything should work.
Can a 10 speed derailleur work on a 8 speed cassette?
A 10-speed derailleur can work with an 8-speed cassette only in one situation – if it’s a road model designed by Shimano and not part of the Tiagra 4700 series. Because the rear shift ratio of Shimano’s 10-speed road derailleurs is 1.7 and matches that of 8 and 9-speed Shimano derailleurs.
Are cassettes better than freewheels?
A freewheel has a lower number of gears so is better suited for casual riders who don’t require the larger selection of gears available from a cassette. It’s much better coasting, allowing you to rest your legs, and if done correctly, can be useful when climbing hills and easier coming down them.
