What is a sail number?
Offshore Sail Numbers These sail numbers are an important way of uniquely identifying a yacht for search and rescue purposes, and are a requirement of the Racing Rules of Sailing, Rule 77 – Identification on Sails. The RYA recommend that all yachts have a unique sail number.
What is the difference between us sailing and ASA?
While US Sailing is mainly focused on the “sport of sailing” the ASA (American sailing association) is centered on “teaching people to sail safely and confidently”. The main difference is the many more sailing schools that are connected to the ASA system.
How do I find my sail number?

- For Laser sailboats built after 2010 the sail number is located in the rear of the cockpit on a sticker.
- For Laser Sailboats Built Prior to 2010 the sail number can be decoded from the Hull Identification Number Located on the stern or on very early lasers under the bow eye.
What do the numbers on a sail mean?
The numbers themselves usually don’t mean anything. Usually, the number is essentially “how many sails of this model have been produced before this one”. So, the first boat will have sail number 1, the 1000th will have sail 1000. Not all boats will come with numbered sails.
How do you number a laser sail?
You must use the full 6 digit number of the boat shown on the plaque on the aft end of the cockpit.
