How good is a Questar telescope?
There are a few niggles, but overall the Questar is a design that has survived because it offers what few other systems (perhaps no other system) does – a complete high-quality observing system in a carry-on case. Yes, it’s a smart astro’ status-symbol, but a very useful tool as well.
What magnification telescope is good?
For most purposes, a telescope’s maximum useful magnification is 50 times its aperture in inches (or twice its aperture in millimeters) . So you’d need a 12-inch-wide scope to get a decent image at 600×. And even then, you’d need to wait for a night when the observing conditions are perfect.

How big of a telescope do I need to see galaxies?
If you want to observe galaxies — and I mean really get something out of the time you put in at the eyepiece — you have to use a telescope with an aperture of 8 inches or more. Anyway, the unit on the Televue 101 is well known as being an excellent focuser, and it works well with everything from my 31mm Nagler to my 4mm Ortho. While Televue calls this scope the “101”, it actually is more like 101.9mm. I am SO happy to have that extra .9mm.

For telescopes that have a greater depth of field it works wonderfully. On the faster scopes however (like the NP series) a two speed focuser is definitely appreciated. Enter the Focusmate. The Focusmate is an add on fine focuser for, well, nearly any of the telescopes sold by TeleVue in recent history.

If anything, the 102-Gibraltar combo was even more stable than with the Genesis, the longer tube of the 102 contributing to easier leverage of the scope in altitude. My assessment of the optical performance of the Televue 102 was carried out over a period of six months.
